Dublin Comic Con: March 2025.

Topic: Successful Application & Event.

Earlier this year, a former lecturer of mine posted into my university Discord channel that Dublin Comic Con (DCC) were taking applications for game exhibitions. As our game build was quite developed at this point, and we were ready to start our social media marketing (at least to a limited degree), I thought I would give the application a try.

The application itself wasn’t too strenuous; just some relatively straightforward questions, along with a pitch deck about our game. Once I finished my application and pitch deck, I submitted them. A week or so later, I was informed that our game had been accepted! This was a great opportunity for us, as we could both present our game to a real audience and have it playtested, as well as start our games’ marketing with DCC.

Come the 14th of March, I travelled to the Dublin Convention Centre via bus, train and Luas/tram. Once I arrived, I prepared our stand, our pull-up poster (which the organisers of the Wild Galway Games Incubator generously made for us while we were on their incubator), as well as our social media channels for DCC. The event itself then took place over the following weekend.

The DCC event itself was great. We had close to a hundred people playtest and enjoy playing our game. We also got a good few followers on our social media channels during the event. The person organising the games’ floor at DCC: Cian Larkan was also great. He checked in on us regularly, and ran the games floor well. Lastly, I could not have presented our game at DCC without the support of my teammates.

I would certainly recommend applying to an event such as DCC. It is very rewarding to see people enjoy your game/project and find the fun in it. You also learn about what does and does not work in your game/project, as well as what needs to be reviewed. Lastly, you get to network with people in your industry or those adjacent to it, create marketing material for your project (such as for your social medias for example), and you can get free tickets essentially (at least in most cases) to the event itself. That said, it needs to be noted that the cost of travel and accommodation can be a little bit expensive (depending on where the event takes place and if you book late). Also, it can be time consuming and exhausting to both prepare for and present your project at these kinds of events. So, when considering an event such as DCC, you should evaluate what’s best for you and your project, but generally, I would recommend it.

It depends on your project, ambition and needs, but generally speaking, events like these are worth applying for. If you’re successful, not only do you get to showcase your game, but you build upon your ‘CV’ for future applications. If unsuccessful, you’ll still have your application, which can be iterated upon and used for follow-up applications, where the likelihood you succeed increases.

Those behind these events and their applications, generally look for individuals that are determined and motivated. If you can demonstrate that you have an exciting, creative project, and that you’re interested in demonstrating it to the public, the likelihood you succeed with your event-based application increases substantially.

Of course, a good application needs to be well-researched and written also. That’s where we can help.
