LEO: Start Your Own Business Programme.
Topic: Successful Application & Programme.
After New Frontiers: Phase 1, I applied for New Frontiers: Phase 2 with a game different to my game Chaos Riders (as I was advised to at the time), but it wasn’t accepted. While disappointing, in my market research for this game I applied with, I learned that it wouldn’t likely succeed in the marketplace. As such, I was able to close the book on this game. I still wanted to take Chaos Riders further, however, as well as learn how to setup/run a business. As such, I decided to apply for the Local Enterprise Office’s (LEO) ‘Start Your Own Business’ (SYOB) programme.
After I submitted my application for the LEO SYOB Programme, I was accepted onto it shortly afterwards. Following this, I started the programme on the 13th of January and completed it on the 24th of February. I also enrolled in the LEO’s ’10 Steps to Self-Employment’ programme and completed its day-long course during this time.
I can recommend both programmes, particularly the SYOB programme, as it gave me a good overview of how to start a business, as well as good practical business advice more generally. I completed both of these programmes online with the Cork North-West LEO, as well as with Veronica Murphy for the SYOB programme, and Tony O’Regan for the 10 Steps programme. While on these programmes, the topics we covered were: Business Development, Profit & Loss Accounting, Funding, Market Research & Business Plans.

It depends on your project, ambition and needs, but generally speaking, programmes like these are worth applying for. If you’re successful, not only do you learn about topics relevant to your project and business, but you build upon your ‘CV’ for future applications. If unsuccessful, you’ll still have your application, which can be iterated upon and used for follow-up applications, where the likelihood you succeed increases.
Those behind these programmes and their applications, generally look for individuals that are competent and determined. If you can demonstrate that you have a well-researched and realistic product/business idea, and that you’re willing to participate in programmes such as this one, the likelihood you succeed with your programme-based application increases substantially.
Of course, a good application needs to be well-researched and written also. That’s where we can help.
